A 600-million-year-old mountain range with a natural amphitheatre at its heart, dark skies rated among the best on Earth, and yellow-footed rock-wallabies clinging to gorge walls few travellers ever see.
The Flinders Ranges is one of the oldest mountain ranges on Earth, with rock formations dating back over 600 million years and some of the world's best-preserved evidence of the Ediacaran explosion of complex life. At its centre, Wilpena Pound — a natural amphitheatre formed by a folded mountain syncline — is one of South Australia's most recognisable landscapes.
Further north, Arkaroola Wilderness Sanctuary was designated an International Dark Sky Sanctuary in 2023, making it one of the best stargazing locations in the country. Conservation programs in gorges like Brachina and Wilkawillina have also brought the endangered yellow-footed rock-wallaby back from the brink.
