Further north, the Mount Spec section's Big Crystal Creek offers a proper camping area with real facilities, plus swimming at the nearby Rockslides — granite boulders and pools that draw both locals and visitors on hot days.
At the range's top, the small village of Paluma sits in cooler, cloud-forest conditions reached via a winding, sealed mountain road, with its own cluster of short walks to lookouts and Cloudy Creek Falls. Together the three sections give visitors a genuine choice: a short falls walk, a swimming-hole afternoon, or a cooler highland village stay, all within a couple of hours of Townsville.
